Just when you thought Panacea couldn’t get any better…

Version 3.66 of Panacea is hot off the presses and is packed full of little improvements that our users have been asking for.

Our developers LOVE doing releases like this.  Software development is never easy, but tweaks like this certainly are a lot easier and more fun than a big hairy project like online bookings (which came immediately before in v3.65).

Check out our release notes for a list of all the goodies that you’ll see in this release.  There are also lots of improvements under the hood that you won’t see, but you will feel them in terms of better performance and responsiveness.

Look out for Version 3.67, which is under development now and will include our single most requested feature – product-level automated reminders!  More on this closer to the release date (which should be in July).

AUCKLAND, 5 July 2017 – Panacea, a provider of cloud practice management systems for small and large animal veterinarians, today announced a world-first, allowing users of the Panacea practice management system to accept real-time online bookings via their clinic’s web site and Facebook page.  This functionality is available now to all Panacea customers and is already being used by vet practices in several countries.

To celebrate the launch of this market-leading technology, Panacea is offering free data migrations (normally USD$999 per clinic) for vets using any Henry Schein/Provet or IDEXX practice management system.

Making Vets More Successful

Panacea’s mission is to ‘Make vets more successful’ and the development of this online booking functionality is an important step in fulfilling this mission.  It is the result of a number of important observations by Panacea, including:

  • Clients increasingly expect to book and manage their appointments online, without having to pick up the phone, yet less than 5% of vets surveyed provide real-time online appointment booking options.
  • Over 40% of phone calls to vets surveyed go unanswered, typically as a result of staff being too busy to attend customer calls.  This negatively impacts upon customer satisfaction and clinic revenue.
  • Over 50% of vet clients surveyed indicated that they would book more appointments with their vet if it was more convenient to do so.  Clients cited difficulties in booking appointments and waiting room delays as the biggest deterrents to booking more appointments with their vets.

Online appointment bookings allows clients to book and manage appointments in real time via the clinic’s web site and Facebook page.  Bookings are made directly into the clinic’s schedule in accordance with rules set by the clinic.

Easy to Set-up and Use

“Almost every vet who we talk to guiltily admits that they’re only using a small proportion of the features provided by their practice management software, but that they don’t have the time to learn about all of the functions that they’re not using and how they work.  We realised early that we need to make product features accessible enough for even the least IT savvy vets to to use.”  said Shelley Duggan, Panacea’s head of operations.  “Panacea is designed from the ground up to be fully intuitive and easy to use and our online appointment booking functionality is no different.  Any vet can set it up and deploy this functionality to their web site and clinic Facebook page in less than 10 minutes. ”

Panacea achieves this by providing all vet customers with a snippet of HTML code that can be embedded into any web site or Facebook page in minutes.  This creates a widget that clients can use to create and managed appointments online.

The simplicity of this approach belies the complex technology behind Panacea’s online booking functionality.  This technology allows the clinic owner to have full control over who can book appointments online and when and which vets and rooms will be automatically allocated to online bookings.

Instead of simply sending an email to the clinic indicating that the client would like to book an appointment (which is all most other systems can currently accomplish), Panacea actually creates the appointment directly in the clinic’s schedule at a time that is convenient to the client and the clinic.

Bringing Vet Practice Management into the 21st Century

Over 95% of computerised vet practices surveyed by Panacea use legacy client/server software that was initially developed in the 1980’s and 1990’s.  These legacy client/server applications are expensive, inflexible and difficult to use.  They require manual upgrades and on-site support and they can’t be easily be extended to support modern functionality such as online client self-service and advanced analytics.

Third party online self-service options are available for many of these legacy products but, as they are separate from the practice management system, they are expensive, complex and hard to maintain.  Most clinics simply don’t bother.

Because Panacea is cloud-based and delivered over the web, all Panacea customers run the latest version of the application at all times.  Updates and bug fixes are released on a regular basis and all Panacea customers have instant access to these.  This allows cloud software companies such as Panacea to release advanced functionality, such as online appointment bookings, instantaneously to all customers, irrespective of their location.

The vet practice management software industry has, thus far, bucked this trend, however.  Panacea’s studies show that 95% of computerised practices still use legacy (mainly Windows-based) practice management software that was originally developed in the 1980’s and 1990’s.  Also, the rates of practice computerisation are very low in most developing countries and even in some developed countries.  Recent estimates, for example, indicate that over 30% of vet practices in the US are not computerised and still rely on paper-based records.

Panacea aims to rectify this situation by providing a cloud-based vet practice management system that is as powerful as it is easy to use.

Panacea 3.5 – A New Look, Lots of New Tech!

We’re really excited to announce the release of Panacea version 3.5, which is by far our biggest release to date.

One of Panacea’s most significant benefits is, being cloud-based, we release updates nearly every week (often more often than that) so we don’t normally announce updates.

Version 3.5, however, is something special.  It’s based on feedback from hundreds of vet customers from New Zealand, Australia, Fiji, the US and a range of other countries.  It represents thousands of hours or development and testing and it’s fair to say that we’re really proud of it.

Panacea Remembers Where You Were

We’ve listened to our customers and, as well as liking cats, you’ve told us that it’s frustrating when Panacea doesn’t remember where you were if you navigate away from a screen and then come back.


Let’s say you’re checking the Schedule, for example, to see if you can fit a patient in.  You find the right time in the Schedule, but before creating the appointment you switch to the Consultation screen to view the patient’s last consult.

When you switch back to the Schedule you want it to remember where you were right?  Well now you do!

Panacea will also remember what you last searched for and will keep these details on screen so you don’t have to repeat the search if you navigate away and back again.

These are just a couple of examples of how Panacea remembers where you were so you don’t have to waste time finding the same information over and over.  We’ve made this simple and unobtrusive, but the technology behind it is truly unique.

Search on Steriods


We’ve driven our developers crazy with our constant demands to improve search, but boy have they delivered!  They’ve completely re-written our search engine to make it faster, more responsive and cooler than ever.

The universal search bar appears at the top of every list – give it a try and see for yourself how fast it is now!  As you search the list below is filtered in real time, letting you see results as you type.

Without boring you with all of the technical details, our developers have re-engineered the search engine to obtain results in real time from the server as you type.  This increases speed and reliability and has also allowed us to make search fully context sensitive.

Beautiful, Easy to Use Consultation Screen

Our customers told us that, while they love all of the advanced functionality in Panacea’s module, the old consultation wizard was bit clunky and not always appropriate for the types of consults that you’re performing.

Working in close cooperation with our customers we’ve completely re-designed the consultation screen to make it cleaner, less cluttered and easier to use:



Yeah, we think it’s kind of sexy too, but it still includes all of the advanced technology that our customers have come to expect from the Panacea consultation module, including:

  • Integrated support for AAHA problem and diagnosis terms – incredibly powerful, allows you to instantly view other consultations (for the current patient or others) with the same master problems or diagnoses
  • Perform sales directly from within the consultation – cut down on double entry of data and never miss another charge!  Panacea allows you to enter items into the consultation sale as the consultation is taking place.
  • The perfect balance between data integrity and flexibility.  Panacea now allows you to edit patient notes even after the consultation has been completed.  All changes are tracked, however, meaning that data integrity is never compromised.
  • Advanced consultation history functionality – so good you’ll hardly believe your eyes.  Instantly view the consultation history for your patient from within the consult itself.  Flick the switch to only show consultations with one or more master problems that match the current consultation.  Flick another switch to show all consults (for all patients) with these master problems.  So easy.  So fast.  So useful.
